Global Ties Detroit and the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture are coming together to present a panel in Detroit led by Saudi social entrepreneur Shahd AlShehail. AlShehail will be sharing her fight to make the world of fashion a more transparent and ethical place for laborers and consumers.

Her passion for promoting ethical fashion started in 2013 when she heard about the Rana Plaza cotton factory collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, that killed hundreds of workers. When she heard the news, she was completing her fieldwork as the first Arab Global Acumen Fellow in India. The disaster inspired her and her business partners to research and communicate what happens in the fashion industry from beginning to end, leading them to create the global nonprofit Project JUST.

Project JUST is an online platform that promotes sustainable fashion policies by monitoring the supply chains of 150+ major fashion brands and tracking the social and environmental impact of the fashion industry.

In the panel AlShehail will be speaking at, she will share lessons from her own campaign on how to make the fashion industry more transparent. She will be alongside the pioneers developing Detroit's booming garment and fashion industries. She will talk about her experience working for some of the largest clothing brands in the world, including Zara, H&M, Chanel and more, to encourage an ethical, sustainable clothing industry. The panel will tackle both ends of the supply chain -- offering simple, concrete advice to producers and consumers on how to encourage more sustainable, moral-centered policies.

Other guests on the panel include moderator Rachel Lutz of The Peacock Room, Bena Burda of Maggie's Organics and Julia Rhodes of Rebel Nell. There will also be complimentary refreshments.

The panel is April 25 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Waterview Loft. This is located at 130 E. Atwater St., in Detroit. This is also free and you can RSVP here.
