Busy Bee: Detroit Garment Group Expands Its Fashion Incubator Offerings To Better Support Detroit’s Fashion Community

We have exciting news! Detroit Garment Group is now servicing a larger segment of Detroit’s fashion community by offering additional services in its year-old fashion incubator based in TechTown in Detroit. The DGG Fashion Incubator was created to assist Detroit’s burgeoning class of fashion professionals with learning how to be successful entrepreneurs while building their fashion collections and is one of many educational programs presented by the five year-old non-profit organization whose mission is to cultivate education and economic development opportunities for Michigan's fashion community.

Along with offering office and production space, industrial sewing machines, high-end design technology, a mailing address, and 24-hour access, the incubator, which previously serviced mainly the sewing production needs of fashion designers, has now expanded to include ancillary services that cater not only to fashion designers, but other industry professionals such as photographers, bloggers and fashion reps. New services include a photography and design studio with capabilities for conducting full product and fashion photo shoots, as well as onsite photography editing.

"We're retooling the DGG Fashion Incubator to be more inclusive for fashion professionals," said Lindsey Alexander, Executive Director of Detroit Garment Group. "By adding backdrops for photographers, utilizing the desk space differently and only keeping the sewing machines used most, we are able to welcome many different fashion professionals into our space, and create an opportunity for better networking and potential collaborations within the community."

DGG is now accepting new incubator residents, along with hourly, half day and full day studio rentals to utilize either the industrial sewing machines or photography equipment. To learn more about the incubator and other programs such DGG’s annual FashionSpeak conference or Industrial Sewing Certificate Program, contact Lindsey Alexander at lindsey@detroitgarmentgroup.org.

About Me: I am a singer/songwriter, blogger, and creative. I was raised in Detroit and studied fashion design for a short time at WSU. This year, I released music and started blogging again (I originally started blogging back in 2009 while at WSU). When it comes to writing song lyrics or poetry, it starts with an overwhelming feeling or feelings that need to be express and let out in that moment of time; I don't think about writing lyrics - the words/ideas/concepts just comes in an instant. When it comes to fashion, I enjoy great visual stories and fashions that are more stylized with interest and detail.

Cardigan - Thrift on the Ave
T Shirt - Detroit Is The New Black
Necklace - Lost & Found Vintage
Rings - Salika Jewels, Purple Love, The Peacock Room, and the old vintage shop that use to be near Cass & MLK

Style Inspiration:
Luxe streetstyle; I love the mix of hard with feminine. Though I have a current rotation of black, I do love pops of color and prints. The focal point of this look is the vintage beaded duster cardigan from Thrift on the Ave. I love this piece for it's versatility and unique appeal. It's a cross between goth and glam. The heather gray slogan graphic tee shirt is Detroit Is The New Black; heather gray is one of my favorites. All of the rings I'm wearing are from local shops and one I purchased at Dally in the Alley a few years ago from a vendor. My initial necklace is by a local artist from Lost & Found Vintage in Royal Oak.

Most Coveted Designer: I am a sucker for anything Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Commes des Garcons, Alexander Wang, Dries Van Noten, Junya Watanabe, Givenchy, Phillip Lim... I could probably go on to name more.

Name:  Courtney Miarka, Wardrobe Stylist and Co-Founder of The Styled Life
Blog: www.closetfashionfix.blogspot.com
Website: www.closetfashionfix.com, www.thestyledlife.com

About Me:
Growing up, I had an intense fascination with style - how others dressed, the thrill of shopping, the latest trends and how to wear them, and the feeling of that perfect outfit. The minute I got my drivers license, I drove straight to Twelve Oaks mall to apply for a job at The Gap. I so vividly remember my first interview... I'm pretty sure I said something like, "I can sell a lady with white gloves a ketchup popsicle if you let me have this job!" And the rest is history, or so they say. From thenceforth, I just couldn't get enough of helping women and men shop for themselves or others, find the next clothing piece that would complete their wardrobe, and simply helping others feel great in what they are wearing.

But alas, this story does not end there. Fashion and Styling as a profession, was not even a consideration at that time, nor was it even offered as a major when I attended college. So, I became a teacher. And teach I did, and still do. Yet, I always kind of felt like I was living a double life. Even though my audience was a group of 25 first-graders, I dressed for the runway almost each and every day. After that last bell rang, I would rush around getting ready for the next day of school, and then head off to the mall. (By now I was working at J. Crew in The Village of Rochester Hills). Never tired, always excited for the rest of my day, I couldn't WAIT to get on that sales floor and help dress my clients and customers well into the night.  And do it all over again the next day. I was living my dream - teacher by day, stylist by night!

Fast forward to 2010 when my beautiful daughter was born and my plans came to a screeching halt. (Is it just me, or do all children seem to have this major effect on your lifestyle?!) Teaching full-time and working nights and weekends in another field I loved just wasn't going to cut it.  For my family or my sanity. And then lightning struck. A friend made a comment to me about starting a fashion blog. AHA! You better bet, by that evening I had a blog and was ready to do my thing! It started out with a few friends who were more than eager to let me in their closets and help them figure out how to wear what they already had. I put together outfits for them, helped them clean out the excess and organize their closets so that they loved getting dressed again. And I blogged about each and every experience. Then it came. The first phone call from someone inquiring about my services who was outside my circle. And overnight, my pastime passion became a business.

My skills as an educator and lifelong learner have helped shape my wardrobe styling business into a ‘teacher-student’ atmosphere, where I am empowering my clients to dress for their shape, their lifestyle, and their personality. Not just ‘telling’ them how to dress. My mission is to show women and men that they can love their wardrobe AND look amazing every day. Getting dressed does not need to be a stressful event, rather you should feel like you have the luxury of “shopping” your own closet. My job is to help my clients fall in love with their clothes all over again, discover new possibilities for how to wear what they own, and make smarter purchases to enhance their current wardrobe. I continue to be amazed by what this business of being a Wardrobe Stylist has allowed me to do and how many women and men’s lives I have been privileged to touch just by helping them know what to wear each and every day!

Style Inspiration:
The inspiration for this outfit came from my love for layering when the summer months turn to fall. Since my job is to help others shop their closet, first and foremost, I immediately searched for items I already owned that I could work into a ‘new’ fall outfit. To me, shopping for fall is not about buying a whole new wardrobe. Rather, it is about finding those few pieces that will help update what you currently have and will last for seasons to come.

I had been stalking this Halston Heritage fit-and-flare shirtdress for a while. When it finally went on sale, I snatched it up.  I love investment pieces at less-than-investment prices! This dress makes a perfect layering option for so many fall outfits. Underneath another dress, as seen here. With leggings or tights and booties in fall. Paired with a fur vest in the winter. Layered over a turtleneck. Underneath a blazer with a belt. So many options!

And I cannot forget to mention this blazer. It’s a dark grey that can work with black or look black depending on your outfit. It’s the perfect fit for so many shapes and I’ve already worn it 3 times since I bought it last week. Talk about a total complement to any current wardrobe!

Favorite Transitional Summer-Fall Fashion Item #1:
A great shirt dress. You can find them all over the local shops. Dresses come in denim, plaid, or just a cotton button-down dress. This style of dress will get you through the summer months and right into winter. I like pieces that are season-less, and this is one of them!  Plus, you will be able to layer with this dress in so many ways and they are incredibly comfortable. Win-win!

Favorite Transitional Summer-Fall Fashion Item #2:
Booties. Find yourself a pair, if you don’t already own them. I know I won’t be the only stylist to suggest this type of shoe, but there is a reason for that. They are incredibly versatile right now; wear them with your jeans or skirts or dresses or cropped pants. How ever you wear the shoe of the season is up to you, but rest assured you’ll still love them when the Michigan snow begins to fall!

Guest Blog: Style It Local with Grace Liang, of Color and Grace

Name: Grace Liang
Blog: Color and Grace
Instagram: @colorandgrace

About Me:
I am a 41 year old petite woman. Born and raised in China, moved to America for love in 2007. My day job is to teach and my dream job is to be a fashion blogger. I'm based in Troy, Michigan.

I grew up in the part of northeast China that got me the terrible combination of Russian winters and North Korean fashion! To make my early fashion-sense even more confusing, I often was mistaken for a boy as I would wear my hair short and dress in my older brother’s hand-me-down clothes. It’s pretty safe to say that no one thought of me as a beauty, and that included myself! It really wasn’t until I became an adult and moved (ran?) away to live in the much more modern and glamorous city of Shanghai that I began to see how fashionable clothes could make a big difference in how a woman looks and feels about her self. They can help give you confidence that you may not otherwise have.

When I met my future husband, who was working in Shanghai for his American employer, my world really began to change. For the first time in my life I was getting compliments on how I looked - and not just once in a while, but every day. As nice as it was to hear, it also gave me some needed pressure to up my fashion game! Now that someone I cared about was paying attention, I did, too. I love to dress to make myself feel good, so when I look in the mirror and see a pulled together stylish woman, it brings self confidence and satisfaction - and that’s a winning combination!

Style It Local:
Burgundy felt hat: Forever 21
Floral print shift dress: Marshall’s
Gold chain link necklace: H&M
Black leather bag: Zac Posen at Saks 5th Avenue
Black leather booties: Sofft at Lord & Taylor

Style Inspiration:
You may already have noticed from my blog’s name Color and Grace that I love colors. They just simply make my eyes happy. Burgundy is such a perfect color for fall. It represents the richness of the harvest season. So I built my outfit from this color. When I saw this dress at Marshall’s I knew it would be my go to piece for a long time. The best part? It was only $16. I am in love with the small scale of the floral print on this shift dress. As I mentioned before, I am a petite with a 5 foot frame, so smaller prints will not overpower me. Instead, it adds interest and a youthful feeling to this look. Shift dresses are the best invention for women who are not feeling very confident with their figure lately. They are not only very comfortable but they can hide a lot of unpleasant things going on with our tummy. I always love bow ties on a shirt or dress, they just scream sophistication and femininity.

Dresses are an instant outfit. One piece with some tasteful accessories; finished. I could have worn a pair of pumps, but I like using booties to bring out the fall feeling and also add a more trendy vibe. The modern looking bag is the right accompaniment with the booties. The burgundy felt hat echoes the dress and adds more fun. I kept it simple with jewelry by just using the gold statement chain link necklace. I wore this look to a brunch at the farmer’s market with my family.

Fall Fashion Must-Have #1:
A long-sleeve, flowy floral shift dress. You can wear it now like I styled it for casual chic, or dress it up with high heels, a fun clutch and sparkly jewelry for a night out or a party. For later, you can add a jacket, faux fur vest or a wool coat with some over the knee boots.

Fall Fashion Must-Have #2:

A pair of booties. Choose a style that you can dress it up or down with different clothing to suit your different moods. The pair I was wearing can do this trick. I can wear it to work with a pair of pants and a blazer, or they are equally capable to wear with a dress or skirt for a night out. For a casual weekend I can wear them with a pair of skinny jeans paired with a jacket.

Guest Blog: Style It Local with Dana Frost of The Closet Confessional

Name: Dana Frost, Personal Stylist
Blog: The Closet Confessional

About Me: A career in fashion wasn't always the obvious choice for me. I was a serious kid and self-proclaimed nerd. I spent my formative years in a school uniform, with zero creative freedom in my day-to-day wardrobe. Add to it that my free time was spent outside in bare feet and beat up denim.

But I was a closeted fashion fiend. I hid composition books filled with magazine clippings of looks I admired. I secretly followed the runway shows in Paris and Milan, in awe of the artistic ability of the designers. I spent my weekends inside my mom's closet - organizing and reorganizing her wardrobe.

It wasn't until I moved to Detroit that I began to really own this secret love and chase down my passion. I found my confidence and started to experiment with my look - daring to wear styles I only dreamed of before - not caring any longer if I blended in or not. Then I started my fashion blog and found my voice.

It's been ten years since that move to Detroit and I recently launched my own styling business. Everyday I get to use my passion and help empower other women to find their confidence in their own personal style.

Style Inspiration: I've lived and worked in Detroit for the last decade, so it was important to me to highlight some of my favorite retail options in the city. We all know of the abundance of shopping in the Metro region, but not everyone is aware of the gems the city has to offer. By shopping at smaller independent boutiques, you get to see the owner's vision come to life with their carefully curated selection. I love being able to support local business and define my own style in the process

For this specific outfit, I picked quality separates for a transitional look as we head into fall. I’m a huge fan of black and white, but wanted to add interest by varying the patterns and prints in this look. Each piece also can be worn multiple ways, making them both stylish and practical.

Fall Style Tip #1: Invest in great basics. Perfectly fitted denim, a leather jacket, a little black dress. Pieces like these are the foundation of your outfit and can maximize your entire wardrobe. If you spend the time and money finding quality pieces that really fit (both your body and lifestyle), you'll never be at a loss for what to wear. Trends come and go, spend your money on staples that will last a lifetime.

Fall Style Tip #2: Love what you buy. Don't buy items just because they are on sale or because they ‘kind of work’. Getting dressed is something we do every single day. If you don't love it in the dressing room, you won't love it at home. Find pieces that make you feel amazing and bring you joy every single time you wear them.

Industry Spotlight: Local Production Company has Mastered the Art of Business Storytelling

Eden Sabolboro of Reel Clever Films can do it all. Filmmaker by day, blogger by night and an all around stylish lady has relocated to Michigan to produce a successful and fashionable life for herself. Reel Clever Films is a full-service production company and specializes in business storytelling, producing videos for fashion companies, weddings, events and even independent films. We were lucky enough to get a chance to ask them a few questions about what they do, why they do it, and why a video might be right for your company.

Image from RCF
DGG: Tell us about yourself, Eden.
Eden Sabolboro: My name is Eden Sabolboro, an actor, filmmaker and lifestyle blogger based here in Metro Detroit.  I immigrated here from Cebu City, Philippines to start a family with my husband and business partner, Thaad Sabolboro, who was raised here in Michigan. I've worn many hats in the media back there, having worked in the past as a radio broadcaster, digital/social media marketer and as a fashion stylist. I shifted my attention to film and videography sometime in 2012, and have been hooked ever since. My husband and I met in film school back in the Philippines, and as they say, the rest is history! We've been independent and small-scale commercial filmmakers since 2010, with some of the short films we've made successfully competing in respected film festivals in the Philippines and abroad. We now have a bouncing (and very hyperactive!) 8-month old named Dallas, and are also partners and proprietors of Reel Clever Films, a full-service video production company based in Detroit and the rest of Southeast Michigan.

I've only been in the state (and in the US, at that!) for a little over a year now, so everything is very new to me. Admittedly, there were a bunch of struggles with being in a new place and being a new mom at the same time, but it's been a lot more awesome lately. I also always feel like a kid lost in a candy store whenever I spend time in Detroit -- I grow more and more in love with the city everyday! When I'm not working on RCF, you can also find me life + style blogging over at Chic in the Tropics.

DGG: Tell us about Reel Clever Flims.
ES: Reel Clever Films is the small, yet full-service video production company that I started with my husband, who is a fantastic editor and cinematographer. We specialize in creating custom video services for businesses and individuals with a distinct cinematic flair. We always aim to create remarkable video content that sees results for our clients, yet remains true and genuine to our style as independent filmmakers. Though commercial videography is our focus for the time being, we do eventually want to keep creating independent films, hopefully being able to work on our first feature-length film soon.

DGG: Describe your job in one sentence.
ES: My job is to constantly seek inspiration and turning them into a complete visual experience.

Image from RCF
DGG: What does a short film do for a brand, and why should more companies consider it?
ES: In marketing, it's undeniable that video as a promotional tool for a brand or lifestyle really works. A content-rich explainer video or commercial speaks volumes, and reaches out and empowers consumers like no other medium can. It's also been well-documented that video produces actual results. Brands experience increased conversion rates, information retention, higher search engine rankings, and increased brand trust -- I even read a study that said 85% of consumers trusted and eventually bought from a brand more after seeing a good explainer video of the brand. That's a pretty good reason for a company to get into the action. Although some small-scale entrepreneurs would initially find rates for business videos intimidating, simple research would say that the benefits (and the potential sales) will outweigh the costs. 2015 onwards will obviously be all about video marketing.

DGG: Describe the process of doing a short film for a company.
ES: Typically, we would ask a client or an agency at least 4 to 8 weeks to complete a project from the drawing board to the final output. There's a lot of stages involved, such as research, scripting, storyboarding, creating mock-ups, the actual shoot dates, post-production, and so on. Much like other content producers, we always aim to have ample time with pre-production so that we have minimal flaws (if at all) to fix in post. Naturally, we want an in-depth discussion with the client way before starting the project to really get a deeper understanding of them and their desired outcomes for the project.

DGG: What's the most rewarding thing about presenting a finished video to a client?
ES: Thaad and I are both extremely passionate about what we do, and I'm not just saying that -- we've figuratively gone through hell and high water to go above and beyond our client's expectations. To be able to deliver a final product that stays true to our client's voice and their ultimate goals, and being able to place our unique label on a medium that lasts forever, makes all the hard work worth it.

Image from RCF

DGG: If you could film anyone in the fashion world, who would it be, what would you want the film to be about and why?
ES: It's pretty hard to choose considering there's just so many inspiring figures in fashion, but for now, I'd love the chance to work with Alexander Wang. I'm such an admirer of his overall aesthetic, and his rise from a young designer to a global force is nothing short of amazing. In addition, his style has the kind of edge I'd love to be able to play with more in our films.

DGG: Describe your style.
ES: Partly minimalist, partly contemporary, partly edgy. You will always find a leather jacket, a lot of black separates, and black ankle boots in my closet.

DGG: How do you take your coffee?
ES: I wish I was cool enough to say that black coffee is my thing, but I take a ton of half-and-halfs with mine.

DGG: POPSUGAR Fashion or Refinery 29?
ES: I spend a ridiculous amount of time on Refinery29. Popsugar's pretty awesome, too. I also love Dazed and Vice.com.

DGG: Instagram Video or SnapChat Video?

ES: There's something liberating about Snapchat. I definitely love the fact that I can post incredibly goofy videos of me that I'd otherwise be too embarrassed to post on Instagram.
