Oh, Shop It: DGG Showroom To Open to Buyers & Boutique Owners

The Entrepreneurs-in-Residence of the DGG Fashion Incubator have been working tirelessly to create a collection for Detroit Garment Group's inaugural Showroom.

Retailers interested in placing orders with talented, local fashion designers, or would even just like to see what's out there to potentially feature local designers in your store next season, are asked to contact lindsey@detroitgarmentgroup.org to make an appointment for the event, taking place October 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at TechTown, 440 Burroughs St., Detroit, MI 48202. 

Below are representative images of each designer's collection, and retailers may specify if you would like to meet with individual designers or would prefer to browse all the collections. Seven collections will be featured.

The DGG Fashion Incuabator launched in November 2015. During that tme, vetted Michigan fashion designers have built their businesses while building their collections, utilizing all the services of the incubator, including industrial sewing machines, cutting table, digitizer and plotter, nine mentors (in every business expertise from legal and finance to sales and marketing), and monthly workshops that focus on the business of fashion.

After spending 35 years working for a communications firm, Mary Verstraete retired and opened Decorative Stitch. There are all kinds of fabrics, classes, repair services and even retreats.

Open since 2004, this fabric store offers unique fabrics with everything from Japanese and African Styles, to hand dyes and Provence. There are classes in-store, and you can even shop online.

This weekend is full of fun and fashionable things to do, so if you're itching to hit the town, these events will keep you busy.

DSO at Ford House | Friday, July 8 to Saturday, July 9

The perfect summer event is here, join the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for an evening of music followed by fireworks on the lake. This two-day event starts on Friday with conductor Teddy Adams and vocalists' Will and Anthony Nunziata; then on Saturday the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will have music inspired by beauty and wonder of America. The grounds will open at 6 p.m., concert begins at 8 p.m., and fireworks start at 9:30 p.m. General tickets are $20 for adult, $12 youth, $50 preferred seating. They also offer VIP tickets that are $200 that include valet parking, special reserved seating, gourmet picnic dinner, private beer and wine service, and access to the house.

BEACH BEAT Brunch | Sunday, July 10

We all love brunch on Sunday’s right…. Yes! Then head over to UFO Factory and brunch with disc jockettes Kartrina and Vanessa. UFO Factory wants you to come ship, eat, drink and enjoy summer sounds from beaches around the world, tiki vibes and lazy hammock tunes. Oh, Shop It: Glam Gardens at Saks Fifth Avenue

Stopped by the Glam Garden party for soothing tea, fresh pastries, spring fashion and refreshing beauty products at Saks Fifth Avenue Troy. Once the tea was poured and scones were plated, we grabbed a seat to get the garden party started. 

Saks Fifth Avenue Stylist Manager Shelli Pacioni started things off to talk about the fashion, which was light, bright and easy to wear. For example, she brought out a great little Chanel button-down top paired with a Chanel tweed pencil mini that would be great for a spring day when you have to be at the office, but you also need to go to a backyard BBQ when you get out of work. Then, a chic Nicholas dress that could be worn however you'd like but Shelli suggested a denim jacket and flats for a more casual look, or pumps and a cardigan for a night out. Finally, she pulled out sleek white jeans and an off-the-shoulder top that could be accessorized with a great scarf to keep warm on those cool summer evenings.

The fashion was over and the beauty began with Will and Daniel who went over the benefits of a few different products recommended for the new season. Trish McEvoy Beta Hydroxy pads, the La Mer Reparative Lotion Armani Eye Serum, Cellcosmet and YSL Volupte lipstick were just a few suggested. It was all amazing. We got to try it, smell it, touch it, hold it--everything you want when looking at new beauty products. Personally, the Cellcosmet was my favorite. It's a gel activator that brightens, tightens and softens skin - I tried it on my face, and I literally felt my face tightening for the next hour after the tea party.

This was a great way to spend the morning, not only because we got to preview some great stuff, but also because I now know what to get the women in my life for Mother's Day! Two birds, one stone.

Oh, Shop It: KENDALL + KYLIE Kollection Available at Neimans

The  KENDALL + KYLIE collection has launched at Neiman Marcus and is in stores now. This collection is exclusive to Neimans as part of the #OnlyatNM program. 

"Neiman Marcus is delighted that Kendall and Kylie created exclusive pieces for our #OnlyatNM program,” said Neiman Marcus Senior Vice President, GMM, Lisa Kazor. "The sophisticated, feminine designs will appeal to a great range of our customers." 

The sisters have created nine pieces inspired by their current closet bringing shoppers one step closer to their aesthetic, taste profile and personal style. Kendal and Kylie have brought a modern twist to black silk jumpsuits, leather shorts and other closet favorites.

Local Designer Series: Knitwear and Jewelry Designer Lets Her Hands Do the Walking

Two Stix 5 Stones is a local knitwear and jewelry line with an bohemian chic style -- I mean, she knits free form, meaning she doesn't have a plan and she just lets her hands do the walking. If that's not bohemian, I don't know what is! Read about this local designer, and see what else she has to offer on her website.

DGG: Tell us about yourself, Beth.

Beth H: I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture several years ago. When I have time, I love to shoot photography and paint abstractly.

DGG: Tell us about Two Stix 5 Stones.

BH: I specialize in knits and accessories (shawls, halter tops, hats, jewelry, etc.) with an artistic flair. The knits are made with high quality exotic yarns including cotton, rayon, silk, linen, wool and other fine yarns. Each knit piece is hand-blend with as many as 16 yarns. I also make jewelry out of fiber, wire, beads & stones (hence the name of my business).

DGG: Why knit? What do you like about knitting versus sewing?

BH: Knitting is more versatile for me. I knit free-form and let the garment evolve. Often times, I do not know what I am making until I finish the piece. I believe “planning” on what I am going to make hampers the design process. I also like that knitting is “travel friendly” and I can take my office to the coffee shop.

DGG: What kinds of products do you sell, and where can people buy them?

BH: I sell shawls, scarves, halter tops, hats, fingerless gloves, fiber accessories and jewelry. I do a few fine art fairs, farmer’s markets and special events throughout the year. My next scheduled art fairs will be the Palmer Park Art Fair ( May 14 and 15) and The Grand Haven Art Festival (June 25 and 26).

DGG: What inspires you to create your products?

BH: I am inspired by nature, painting, weather, etc.

DGG: What does your workspace look like?

BH: My “workspace” is an absolute mess with knitting needles, yarn, beads and stones everywhere!

DGG: If you could dress anyone in your products, who would it be and why?

BH: I would love to dress the Olsen twins because their look is classy and sophisticated with an edge.

DGG: What has been your biggest learning experience throughout the process of starting and growing your business?

BH: Producing items with a modest price point.

DGG: Describe your style.

BH: My style is fashionable but timeless.

DGG: How do you take your coffee?

BH: Cream Only...
