On The Town: Playground Detroit Presents Multi-Media Artist, Dessislava Terzieva

Playground Detroit is proud to present multi-media artist, Dessislava Terzieva, in her first solo exhibition this Tuesday, November 10. Terzieva has roots in Detroit, being that she received a BFA in Political Science and went to Wayne State University’s law school for one year. She has always been passionate about political and social issues and has found an innovative way to make them more expressive by “expanding on them through art.”

To open the dialogue and create a new way of thinking about political and social issues, Terzieva chose to communicate via art rather than communicating in “the system in which they already exist.” Terzieva started her artistic journey only four years ago with collage, and has grown leaps and bounds to where she is today. She has developed and created these collages that give items a newfound importance that can allow for open communication in this 360-degree, immersive experience.

Terzieva was inspired by drug busts, dollar stores, and the motor oil bottle aisles at Meijer. Based on these sources of inspiration, she has created a political statement presenting the layout of confiscated items, the topic of [dis]organized chaos, and excess. She hopes that the audience will immerse themselves in this piece and be able to consider their own views of spirituality once they walk through installation and arrives at an altar.

Gather up some friends to enjoy a Tuesday night of analyzing an installation while having open conversations about spirituality, excess, and chaos in our world. The opening reception for this exhibit is from 6 from 8 p.m. at The Playground, located at 1535 Sixth St., 3rd Floor, in Detroit. Issue 2 Rooftop Party | Friday, October 23

Celebrate the release of the second Grand Circus Magazine, this weekend. Come grab the brand new issue featuring lots of rich, Detroit culture and urbanism. Held at the top of The Auburn, join Grand Circus Magazine and the crew for a beautiful view of Detroit, Our/Detroit cocktails, and the new issue! While you flip through the pages of culture, warm up by the fireplace as you de-stress from the busy workweek. The release party will be from 7 to 11 p.m. with an extravagant after party at the Anteitam for more cocktails and tasty cuisine.

A.R.T. H.A.P.P.E.N.I.N.G. | Saturday, October 24

SKANDOUGHLESS is making its first ever appearance as an artist collective with collaboration from members in Cleveland and Detroit. SKANDOUGHLESS is an up-and-coming fashion performance label and artist collective founded by Lindsay Cashews only 2 years ago. After feeling that art is becoming stagnated in the gallery setting, she decided performance and fashion were her next steps. This art is one of a kind, creative, inspiring, and cutting-edge that features music on the runway that Cashews wrote specifically for this show. From 6 to 9 p.m., you will have the opportunity to absorb and internalize the art in the gallery showing featuring art that is a performance and spectacle, as well as wearable pieces of art that can be translated into street fashion. From 10pm-1am celebrate this experience and art with DJ PrismViews and a guest musician performing all night. SKANDOUGHLESS has been shown in Chicago and New York Fashion Week and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome her to the streets of Detroit.

Colorosity: The Annual Science Soiree | Saturday, October 24

This all-ages event features color and sparks curiosity through new exhibits, interactive art, and design adventures. Act like a kid for the night and have fun with the paint and “messy” materials included in this interactive art, so make sure you aren’t wearing your favorite outfit! Partake in hands on art as you watch performances by the Detroit Windsor Dance Academy. Not only will this event be fun for all ages, it also benefits the Michigan Science Center’s high-impact programs. Tickets can be purchased on their main website with prices of $125 for adults and $50 for children; this event will sell out, so make sure to get your tickets today.

2016 Calendar Girls Release Party | Sunday, October 25

This weekend is full of release parties, and this is one you don’t want to miss. Join us at Tongue’s Coffee from 4 to 9 p.m. to celebrate the release of the 2016 Calendar Girls. DJ Paulo Dusicska will be spinning music all night as you enjoy appetizers, pumpkin spiced lattes, and socializing. Calendars will be available for purchase at the event for only $15. Not only will this be a great event to attend, but all proceeds from calendar purchases goes to the Guidance Center Kids- TALK CAC, which is a charity for sexually and physically abused children.

On the Town: Art of Detroit is Back at Saks

Celebrate the city and the surrounding suburbs with the 2^nd Annual Art of Detroit from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, August 21 at Saks Fifth Avenue. Guests are encouraged to “travel the M-1 Rail” through the store to enjoy food from local restaurants, sip on custom cocktails and view original artwork by students and graduates of College for Creative Studies.

“Things are getting bigger and better - in the city, and with our event,” said Saks Fifth Avenue Marketing Director Maureen Conway. “We’re embracing the opportunity to showcase all that Detroit has to offer – from our generous restaurant partners, to the amazing student artists – we truly aim to create an environment that blends all things Detroit, in a way that can be appreciated in an abstract fashion.”  

Café ML, 220, Townhouse, Imerman Cake Company, Rock City Eatery, Atwater Brewery, London Chop House and more local favorites will provide food stations and custom cocktails. Jared Sykes and CCS graduate Ben Sharkey and will provide entertainment and music for the evening, while attendees can browse exclusive designer trunk shows featuring fine and fashion jewelry, clothing and accessories.

Bikes and Yoga: Season Two Opener | Thursday, May 14

Detroit Community Yoga has partnered with H2O Insightful Creativity, and Healthy Detroit for Bikes and Yoga: Season Two Opener from 5:30 to 8 p.m. meeting at Wheelhouse Detroit Bike Shop. Get into gear and enjoy a nice bike ride along the river walk to the North Fishing Pier on Belle Isle where the yoga session will take place. Once the yoga class is over, take an easy ride back to the Wheelhouse and enjoy picturesque Detroit. Participants need to bring a bike, helmet, yoga mat, water bottle, and layers (depending on the weather), and the event is free and open to the public.

The Greening of Detroit 25^th Anniversary Gala | Thursday, May 14

Celebrate 25 years with the Greening of Detroit at its annual anniversary gala. The Greening of Detroit has been making their mark all around Detroit to make it a sustainable living area for years and have planted 6,000 to 7,000 trees annually in hopes of making Detroit even more beautiful. This celebration will showcase the amazing work that has been done over the years, while enjoying a five course meal, with locally grown food, drinks, and more from 6 to 10 p.m. at The Rattlesnake Club. An Evening of Art + Science | Thursday, May 14

Celebrate the art of science at the second annual gala at 6 p.m. at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Some of the best contemporary artists have created art inspired by the science and medical research of the Taubman Scholars. All scientific art will be auctioned off, and proceeds will go towards the DIA’s grants program.
