24 Hour Thrift Store | Friday, April 14
The opening reception for a new exhibition with work by Detroit-based artists Monica Dubray and Laura Finlay will be taking place at TH.Muller Galleri from 7 to 10 p.m. It will depict a world of hidden treasures and unexpected pleasures. There will be an array of merchandise and refreshments for you to enjoy. This event is free to the public!

Macaron Mini Pop Up | Saturday, April 15
The Blu Kitchen is hosting another pop up from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Detroit Mercantile Co.! In honor of Easter, there will be plenty of spring flavors including berry blush, strawberry, rhubarb and rose. Macarons will be $2.50 each.

Wines of Spain - Tasting Workshop | Saturday, April 15
Join The Royce as they sample wines of Spain in their series of educational workshops. The course is designed for wine lovers of all levels and will explore the rich offerings of Spanish wine culture. You'll be able to sample a number of delicious wines, including red, white and sparkling, along with tasty Spanish bar snacks. There are different times available, and tickets are $40. Breathe Women Empowerment Meeting | Saturday, April 15
The goal of this event is to create a safe environment for women to express themselves freely and vocally. Starting at 3 p.m. at Collective Studios, there will be motivational speaking and the chance for women to share advice and their experiences with one another. Opening Reception, Austen Brantley: Black and White | Saturday, April 15
With his new exhibit, Austin Brantley will be exploring "The Social Racism in America" throughout his work. He is diving into concepts of self-examination of being black and being a black artist in America. The exhibit will be running from April 15 through May 27 at Detroit is the New Black, with a free opening reception the 15th from 6 to 9 p.m.

They offer space to artists, entrepreneurs, organizations, makers and nonprofits so they can work and create the best they can. They have free weekly tours every Wednesday at 2 p.m. This is a great place to start if you've never been to Ponyride before.

Designer Happy Hour with Betabrand | Thursday, January 26
Liz Rossof, director of Betabrand's Think Tank, is coming to Detroit is the New Black in hopes of finding designers to feature on Betabrand in February! This event will also be hosted by your's truly. Betabrand will give a presentation at 7 p.m. (the event starts at 6 p.m.) on their platform, and we'll be discussing our plans for 2017. This night will also be the perfect chance to network with fellow Detroit designers and learn how to grow your brand better. All Detroit designers and design thinkers are welcome to come. H2SAS Entrepreneur Panel: Self-Care, Startups and Mindfulness | Thursday, January 26
When starting businesses, people oftentimes are only worried about growing it and making it successful. So much so that they may neglect to take care of themselves. This panel at Bamboo Detroit will help you realize that health is our greatest asset and without it we can't succeed. Gayle's Chocolates and Zach Berg of Berg's Provisions is coming back for the third time to give you the best cheeses and chocolates. Indulgence Event 2017 | Saturday, January 28
The sweetest party in town is happening from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Royal Oak Farmers Market. You'll have the chance to sample over 100 sweets and cocktails! Blake's Chili Cook-Off | Saturday, January 28
Nothing is more perfect on a cold, winter day like homemade chili, drinks, music and a good time. From 1 to 4 p.m. chili will be served, followed by the judging. Live music will go from 1 to 9 p.m. in the tasting room. Tickets are $14 and will give you two drinks tickets and ten chili tickets.

From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Detroit is the New Black will turn into a holiday shopping pop-up you won't want to miss.  Support emerging entrepreneurs from the Build program and Detroit's entrepreneurship community while getting a little holiday shopping done. Fresh baked goods, handmade ware and arsenal candles will be available for a one-of-a-kind shopping and vending experience.

Birmingham Winter Market | Friday, December 2 to Sunday, December 4
Birmingham will turn into a winter wonderland this weekend at the 7th Annual Birmingham Winter Market. Attendees will enjoy holiday shopping, warm food and drinks, crafts, ice carving, live reindeer and warming stations. Bring the whole family to downtown Birmingham and celebrate the season.

Noel Night | Saturday, December 3
Noel Night is celebrating its 44th year from 5 to 10 p.m. in Detroit's Midtown District. Over 100 local businesses including the DIA, Charles H. Wright Museum, the Detroit Historical Museum and the Detroit Public Library will open their doors to the public free of charge. Horse-drawn carriage rides, holiday shopping, family crafts and performances will be happening all evening. The community sing-along on Woodward Avenue, led by The Salvation Army Eastern Michigan Division Band, will conclude the evening's activities.

All festivities will be taking place in Midtown Detroit.

Oh, Shop It: DITNB Boutique is Open for Business

Détroit is the New Black has officially opened its doors at 1426 Woodward Ave. in downtown Detroit. The clothing brand is known for its graphic t-shirts, but they will also be featuring other brands on rotation, such as Douglas & Co. and Lip Bar, in the store.

A favorite of many Detroit locals and natives, the brand combines minimalism and street styles to create the perfect balance of urban fashion. This store opening comes just in time for Detroit's birthday, which was July 24.

The store is open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Stop in!

Oh, Shop It: Detroit Is The New Black Found a New Home

Detroit Is The New Black has moved into Ponyride, and is celebrating the move with a party for all its valued customers and supporters, along with anyone who is new to Detroit Is The New Black. The soiree is a great opportunity to chat with CEO and Founder Roslyn Karamoko, and browse all of the products available. A special gift with purchase will be available for patrons who attend the event.  

This event will take place Friday, April 1 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the new location. Ponyride is located at 1401 Vermont St., 2^nd floor, in Detroit. Also there will be free special gift with purchase for attendees. Come support local fashion.

Tracy Reese's fall collections have found a new home, right here in the city. Tracy Reese, Tracy Reese Black Label, Plenty by Tracy Reese and Plenty Dresses by Tracy Reese collections can be found at Détroit Is The New Black in Midtown.

"I couldn't be more excited to have a retail presence in Detroit!" said Reese. "This is my hometown and it's extremely close to my heart. It truly feels like a bit of a homecoming and I'm thrilled to partner with Roslyn Karamoko at Détroit Is The New Black for this event."

Industry Spotlight: Fashion Buyer and International Retail Consultant Turns Small Business Owner in Detroit

Roslyn Karamoko, creator of Détroit Is the New Black, has made her way through the fashion industry working for companies like Saks Fifth Avenue, and really doing it all. Styling, buying and consulting are all careers listed on her resume, and now she can add business owner. Karamoko’s world travels have landed her right here and Detroit, and fortunately for us, she decided to set up shop (literally) and stay a while.

DGG: Tell us about yourself, Roslyn.

Roslyn Karamoko: I grew up in Seattle, Washington and went to college in Washington DC. I love to travel, explore new and hidden gems in the city, and hang out at Belle Isle.

DGG: Tell us about your journey in the industry.

RK: I majored in fashion merchandising at Howard University and moved to New York upon graduation. I worked briefly as a styling intern for Bad Boy records before landing a job as a merchandising assistant at Saks Fifth Avenue. I completed the buying and planning development program and went on to become an associate buyer, then planner in the women's outerwear office. After Saks, I moved to Singapore to work as a retail consultant for an online e-commerce start-up called Zalora, which has since grown to become the largest online fashion retailer in Southeast Asia. During my time with the company, I sourced international high-street labels from the U.S. and Europe to sell throughout Southeast Asia. 

DGG: What are the pros and cons of being a fashion buyer?

RK: The pros are being able to stay abreast on the current trends and the fast-paced environment. It's super exciting to attend market twice a year and see all of the fresh products each season. The cons are managing OTB (Open-To-Buy) budgets and writing orders. Ultimately, you're responsible for sales, and this doesn't always correlate with your individual tastes and/or aesthetic.

DGG: What advice do you have for someone looking to have a career as a buyer?

RK: I would advise them to find a buyers training program through a major department store. Other than Saks, Macy's has a great one and I believe Sears has a program based out of Chicago for those not in NY. Also, Limited brands (Victoria Secret, The Limited, Bath and Body Works) have a great training program that offers a solid foundation for anyone looking to get into retail buying/merchandising. 

DGG: When and why did you start Detroit is the New Black?

RK: I started Detroit is the New Black in 2014. I wanted to offer a message of optimism for the city as well as create a cosmopolitan/upscale feel. I think it's a nice alternative to the Detroit product that's out there, and it reflects a fresh perspective. Long term, I want to create a sustainable fashion label for Detroit that has a warehouse and manufacturing facility in the city, which will create jobs and inspire locals looking to work in fashion to stay in Detroit. 

DGG: What has been the most rewarding thing about starting your business?

RK: I would say the overwhelming response to the brand. I feel blessed that it's resonated with so many people from varying walks of life. I've always sought to bring people together through fashion, and I feel I've been able to strike that balance with the brand. 

DGG: What advice do you have to give about starting a business?

RK: I would say have a solid business plan to start out with, but be flexible as things always change. Also, be resilient and stay the course. There are certainly challenging days when you feel like giving up, but remembering why you started should always give you new motivation to keep moving forward. 

DGG: Tell us about your store in midtown and what you have to offer, besides your iconic shirts!

RK: The store is a high-low mix of luxury labels and local designers. I wanted to create a shop that offers aspirational runway pieces, but still have affordable items for everyday wear. 

DGG: Describe your style.

RK: Classic, easy, signature. Usually black. 

DGG: How do you take your coffee?

RK: Black.
