Guest Blog: Style It Local with Bruna Camargo of StyleMile

About Me: When I moved to Michigan from Brazil in 2002 I was only 12, but style and trends already played a big part in my life. I ditched the flip-flops and the surfer shorts and quickly learned that colorful scarves and pom-pom boots would be a new staple in my pre-teen wardrobe.

I honed in on my creativity during my time at College for Creative Studies in Detroit, and fashion became a big part of my “brand” – can you tell I work in advertising? My knack for shopping turned into thrifting adventures and soon I realized I needed an outlet to collect the different combinations that followed trends but at the same time defied them.

StyleMile became that place to me. It was somewhere I could document my ever-evolving personal style, unravel my not-so-serious musings and inspire others to do the same. I don’t believe chasing the most expensive price tags is the only way to feel absolutely fantastic and confident about the way you look. "Great style, humor and sass-piration walked into a search bar.” That’s StyleMile.

Style It Local:
Long-Sleeve Romper: Posh Boutique – Novi, MI
Leopard Print Sandals:
Target
Earrings:
Forever 21
Necklace:
Gorjana by Rocksbox
Polish:
Chinchilly by Essie

Style Inspiration: Fall in Michigan is always tricky. Sunny by day, but chilly by night, these long sleeves will keep me warm on top, but I can still stretch my legs for a few more weeks with a romper, even when the temperatures begin to drop. Leopard print has become almost a neutral print, so I dared mixing it with the geometric patterns on the romper. This go-to gray polish is the perfect hue for fall as it’s on-trend and goes with any color your outfit may bring.

Fall Style Tip #1: Wear the shoes! Autumn is the most perfect time to rock all the shoes that have been gathering dust in the back of your closet. Cold enough for booties, but still warm enough for pumps, this is the time to experiment with different textures, materials, shapes, heels and more. This time of year I usually begin my look from the shoes up – there’s only a small window of time to wear those cut-out metallic brogues you’ve been staring at all summer. Do it (and don’t forget the accessories like colorful socks)!

Fall Style Tip #2: I love wearing a neutral look with a focus on a single bold print. Be it an accessory like a scarf, or a headband, or a printed pair of slacks, try a monochromatic scheme and throw in a wrench in that formula. You’ll find that the single print will draw attention to what you’d like to enhance that day and it will give you that certain chic je ne sais quoi everyone craves.

Industry Spotlight: Local Production Company has Mastered the Art of Business Storytelling

Eden Sabolboro of Reel Clever Films can do it all. Filmmaker by day, blogger by night and an all around stylish lady has relocated to Michigan to produce a successful and fashionable life for herself. Reel Clever Films is a full-service production company and specializes in business storytelling, producing videos for fashion companies, weddings, events and even independent films. We were lucky enough to get a chance to ask them a few questions about what they do, why they do it, and why a video might be right for your company.

Image from RCF
DGG: Tell us about yourself, Eden.
Eden Sabolboro: My name is Eden Sabolboro, an actor, filmmaker and lifestyle blogger based here in Metro Detroit.  I immigrated here from Cebu City, Philippines to start a family with my husband and business partner, Thaad Sabolboro, who was raised here in Michigan. I've worn many hats in the media back there, having worked in the past as a radio broadcaster, digital/social media marketer and as a fashion stylist. I shifted my attention to film and videography sometime in 2012, and have been hooked ever since. My husband and I met in film school back in the Philippines, and as they say, the rest is history! We've been independent and small-scale commercial filmmakers since 2010, with some of the short films we've made successfully competing in respected film festivals in the Philippines and abroad. We now have a bouncing (and very hyperactive!) 8-month old named Dallas, and are also partners and proprietors of Reel Clever Films, a full-service video production company based in Detroit and the rest of Southeast Michigan.

I've only been in the state (and in the US, at that!) for a little over a year now, so everything is very new to me. Admittedly, there were a bunch of struggles with being in a new place and being a new mom at the same time, but it's been a lot more awesome lately. I also always feel like a kid lost in a candy store whenever I spend time in Detroit -- I grow more and more in love with the city everyday! When I'm not working on RCF, you can also find me life + style blogging over at Chic in the Tropics.

DGG: Tell us about Reel Clever Flims.
ES: Reel Clever Films is the small, yet full-service video production company that I started with my husband, who is a fantastic editor and cinematographer. We specialize in creating custom video services for businesses and individuals with a distinct cinematic flair. We always aim to create remarkable video content that sees results for our clients, yet remains true and genuine to our style as independent filmmakers. Though commercial videography is our focus for the time being, we do eventually want to keep creating independent films, hopefully being able to work on our first feature-length film soon.

DGG: Describe your job in one sentence.
ES: My job is to constantly seek inspiration and turning them into a complete visual experience.

Image from RCF
DGG: What does a short film do for a brand, and why should more companies consider it?
ES: In marketing, it's undeniable that video as a promotional tool for a brand or lifestyle really works. A content-rich explainer video or commercial speaks volumes, and reaches out and empowers consumers like no other medium can. It's also been well-documented that video produces actual results. Brands experience increased conversion rates, information retention, higher search engine rankings, and increased brand trust -- I even read a study that said 85% of consumers trusted and eventually bought from a brand more after seeing a good explainer video of the brand. That's a pretty good reason for a company to get into the action. Although some small-scale entrepreneurs would initially find rates for business videos intimidating, simple research would say that the benefits (and the potential sales) will outweigh the costs. 2015 onwards will obviously be all about video marketing.

DGG: Describe the process of doing a short film for a company.
ES: Typically, we would ask a client or an agency at least 4 to 8 weeks to complete a project from the drawing board to the final output. There's a lot of stages involved, such as research, scripting, storyboarding, creating mock-ups, the actual shoot dates, post-production, and so on. Much like other content producers, we always aim to have ample time with pre-production so that we have minimal flaws (if at all) to fix in post. Naturally, we want an in-depth discussion with the client way before starting the project to really get a deeper understanding of them and their desired outcomes for the project.

DGG: What's the most rewarding thing about presenting a finished video to a client?
ES: Thaad and I are both extremely passionate about what we do, and I'm not just saying that -- we've figuratively gone through hell and high water to go above and beyond our client's expectations. To be able to deliver a final product that stays true to our client's voice and their ultimate goals, and being able to place our unique label on a medium that lasts forever, makes all the hard work worth it.

Image from RCF

DGG: If you could film anyone in the fashion world, who would it be, what would you want the film to be about and why?
ES: It's pretty hard to choose considering there's just so many inspiring figures in fashion, but for now, I'd love the chance to work with Alexander Wang. I'm such an admirer of his overall aesthetic, and his rise from a young designer to a global force is nothing short of amazing. In addition, his style has the kind of edge I'd love to be able to play with more in our films.

DGG: Describe your style.
ES: Partly minimalist, partly contemporary, partly edgy. You will always find a leather jacket, a lot of black separates, and black ankle boots in my closet.

DGG: How do you take your coffee?
ES: I wish I was cool enough to say that black coffee is my thing, but I take a ton of half-and-halfs with mine.

DGG: POPSUGAR Fashion or Refinery 29?
ES: I spend a ridiculous amount of time on Refinery29. Popsugar's pretty awesome, too. I also love Dazed and Vice.com.

DGG: Instagram Video or SnapChat Video?

ES: There's something liberating about Snapchat. I definitely love the fact that I can post incredibly goofy videos of me that I'd otherwise be too embarrassed to post on Instagram.

Wear It's At: Transitional Dressing From Summer to Fall

This time of the year is usually the most difficult when it comes to dressing for the day. With cooler mornings and evenings, and warm (sometimes too hot!) days, one needs to dress is layers that can be easily taken off and on, depending on what the temperature is.

The three looks picked out below are great starting points for dressing during those typical August days. And instead of going out and getting exactly what we have on this page, you could probably just use the outfits as inspiration and shop your closet. Guest Blog: Style It Local with Anna C., of Ceen by Anna C.

Name: Anna C.
Blog: Ceen by Anna C.
Website: ceenbyannac.com
Instagram: annaceen

About Me: I fell in love with fashion when I started working for SHEI Magazine in 2011. The first time I set foot on set for a photo shoot I knew that this was where I was meant to be. Ever since, I've been styling, directing and organizing photo shoots. Whether it's an editorial, commercial, or simply extra curricular (e.g. for my blog), there is no place I'd rather be than styling a photo shoot.

As a blogger, I don't usually place myself in front of the camera. I really prefer to be directing and styling the models. While living in Ann Arbor, I enjoyed collaborating with several local retail boutiques including Ayla & Company, Today Clothing and Lily Grace Cosmetics (just to name a few). With my recent move to New York City to work for Lafayette 148 New York, I'm excited to further immerse myself into the world of fashion from the perspective of a Michigander and firm Detroit Supporter.

Style It Local:
Brown & Black Cape: H&M
Black Vest: Lafayette 148 New York (available at Saks, Neiman Marcus & Bloomingdale's)
White Collared Button Down: J. Crew
Coated Moto Pants: Madewell
Brown Suede Knee High Boots: Cole Haan
Black & Brown Wooden Heels: Levity, DSW
Black Stone Necklace: The Get Up Vintage, Ann Arbor
White Stud Earrings: American Apparel
Black, Brown and White Striped Tote: Henri Bendel
Black Suede Hat: H&M
Gold Bangle Bracelets: J. Crew

Style Inspiration: For this look, I was thinking about the perfect fall essentials: knee high boots, a suede hat and anything that can be layered like a vest or poncho. Using tonal hues of brown and chestnut, I built upon a basic black pant, white shirt ensemble. It's hard to think about fall while the summer temperature rage on, but as the evenings get cooler and we begin to feel the chill of autumn's approach, one cannot deny that fall is coming.

Fall Style Tip #1: Turn a basic cotton or cashmere long sleeve or turtle neck into something fabulous by using as the base for layering. A statement necklace can take your look from a 5 to a 10 in no time! Invest in jewelry because it never goes out of style.

Fall Style Tip #2: There is nothing wrong with faux leather! Not only are vegan and quality artificial leathers more sustainably responsible, they are also easier to care for and do not require a leather specialist for cleaning. When purchasing [faux] leathers, look for something made from neo-tech cloth with fibers that won't break down or weaken with wear.

On The Town: Detroit's Most Fashionable Night of the Year

Oh, what a night! Michigan's most fashionable made it our for an evening of fashion, drinks and plenty of dancing to benefit the Detroit Institute of Arts. Cocktails were served behind the DIA to get the night started, and shortly into the evening everyone was ushered into the DIA where the Neiman Marcus fashion show began. It was a runway chock-full of fresh trends: flared bottoms, cape layering and folklore-chic. The show ended, and the night really began with the after party under the stars; fashionistas and fashion-fella's mixed, mingled and danced until their feet couldn't handle anymore.

I could talk about Fash Bash all day - I'm not kidding - but you don't want to read me ramble on (especially if you didn't go), so scroll through the pictures, imagine you were front row, and start making your fall fashion shopping list.

Local Designer Series: Local Designer Creates Medically-Inspired Menswear Accessories

After reading a medical article about how doctors can pass along infections from one patient to the next through their long ties, Iian Robert Mull and his husband Dr. Jim Sylvain decided to use Iian's fashion background to their advantage and do something about it. Not only did Dr. Sylvain start topping off his suits with bow ties, but a business was born. Read all about Beauhawk, and the man behind the brand, below.

Image from Beauhawk

DGG: Tell us about yourself, Iian.
Iian Robert Mull: My name is Iian Robert Mull and I currently live in Lansing, Michigan with my husband and business partner, Dr. Jim Sylvain. Besides being a small business owner, I am on the faculty at Central Michigan University in the Fashion Merchandising and Design program. Outside of fashion, my interests include exploring the mind and body connection by studying yoga and swimming. I love traveling, reading, great fitting soft T-shirts, and walking my dogs.

DGG: Tell us the Beauhawk story.
IRM: Beauhawk came into existence because of an American Medical Association (AMA) article that suggested that MRSA Staph Infection (and other bacterial infections) can be spread from one patient to another by contact with a physician’s long tie. My husband and business partner, Dr. Jim Sylvain, decided to start wearing bow ties instead. This became his signature look and with my background in the fashion industry, we decided to design and manufacture modern and fun bow ties.  We have branched out and started making long ties, too, for those guys that may feel a bow tie isn’t for them.

Image from Beauhawk

DGG: What was your inspiration for the Downtown, Uptown, Midtown, SOHO and WEHO collections?
IRM: The inspiration really came from the different types of individuals that might wear each type of tie. We took inspiration from New York City and other big cities, like Los Angeles. The Downtown version of our tie is the pre-tied bow tie and is an easy and quick way to make an outfit pop.  This style is targeted to a young and hip customer. The Uptown version of our tie is the traditional long tie, that being said, the Uptown customer is a little more traditional in their style choices, but still want to look sharp. The Midtown version is the traditional self-tie bow tie, and this tie is designed for a dapper gentleman that really likes to make a fashion statement with his tie. Branching in another direction, we decided to design and manufacture lapel pins to compliment our tie collection. The SOHO collection is a lapel pin with a miniature bow tie, and the WEHO collection is a lapel pin with a flower.

DGG: Do you plan on expanding your product line in the future, or just sticking to ties?
IRM: Absolutely. Our ultimate goal is to be a lifestyle brand. At the moment we are in product development for great fitting, super-soft T-shirts.

Image from Beauhawk

DGG: What has been the most rewarding thing about starting your own company?
IRM: The most rewarding thing about starting my own company is to watch it grow. Being able to design a product, see it come to life, and then see customers wearing it - and looking great in it - is an amazing feeling.

DGG: What is the best and worst advice you have ever received during this business venture?
IRM: The best advice I have received is to not work with friends.

DGG: If you could style anyone in the world with your products, who would it be and why?
IRM: Robert Downy Jr.: Still super sexy, sophisticated and a little irreverent.
Johnny Depp: Dandy, and loves to play with clothing.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt: He’s handsome, charming and dressed up well, plus he could use some fun with his clothing choices.
Adam Levine: His body

Image from Beauhawk

DGG: How do you want to be remembered?
IRM: I want to be remembered as a person who is passionate about what he did, believed, and loved.

DGG: Describe your style.
IRM: I call my style traditional with a twist. I love traditional pieces like bow ties and I like to put a little modern twist on the garment. My style is a little bit of dandy mixed with street style -- I love color and print.

DGG: How do you take your coffee?
IRM: I take it with cream!

DGG: Tom Ford menswear or Brunello Cucinelli menswear?
IRM: Tom Ford all the way.

DGG: Belts or suspenders?

IRM: Both. I like options!
